Weird Futures

Sunday 6th October

LOCATION: Devonport Guildhall
14:00 - 15:30 | 56min plus Q&A

International short films

This programme collates visions for the future, imaginings, speculations, utopias and divinations. How might film become a tool for fostering hope, building resilience, planning revenge, organising for connection? Passing through portals of transition and stages of transformation, the films propose change as an interconnected ecology of processes without a preconceived form, filled with possibility. Hatching into the weird and wonderful unknown.

GOMBAUT

Maite Alonso, Unai Ruiz | 11min

In an imaginary island, childhood unfolds in a world without hierarchies. Among ancient trees, scattered branches, and a ship wrapped in mist, the film explores forms of coexistence that require no armor or systems of control. Inspired by real community experiences, Gombaut inhabits a shared territory between species, where life discovers alternative ways of existing. Rooted in Land cinema and ecofeminist thought, the film reflects on the relationships between bodies, communities, and the landscapes they inhabit.

THE MARTIAL FOREST

J Triangular | 8min

In a dystopian future, exiled Kung Fu master Big Sister 13 leads a gang of trans and queer fighters who reclaim a forgotten zone and transform it into the Martial Forest—a secret training ground where care is as powerful as combat. Together, they fight to survive rising violence and build a future rooted in chosen family and trans resistance.

Anarchafeminist Divinations

Işıl Karataş | 16min

Anarchafeminist Divinations is an experimental documentary that reimagines the traditional Anatolian practice of coffee-ground fortune-telling, blending it with the photochemical process of chemigramm. While traditional readings focus on heteronormative themes like family and love, the film transforms this cultural technique into a tool for collective reflection on the future. Guided by the concept of transindividuality—the idea that no one is free until everyone is—the film explores futures through entangled, multispecies perspectives.
This ethnography of the future and friendship opens space to imagine new ways to restore the interconnectedness of all living and non-living beings.

IMAGO

Jean-François Reverdy | 11min

IMAGO, the third chapter of Camera Insectorum, captures a body in the darkness of its pinhole camera. But nothing is possessed. The image retains a presence
that never ceases to elude it.
